The adult moths of this species are basically dark orange. There are a variety of darker markings on each forewing, including an oval near the middle of each wing. The hindwings are plain and are a paler orange colour.

There are several subspecies described, including:

  • sublutea from New Guinea
          (Illustration 12, Plate CCXIV, Hampson 1903-1913)

    The specimen illustrated was caught in northern Australia.
