This is a small shrub, growing up to 60 cm high. Leaves are linear to 25 mm long, folded lengthways, with the tip usually 3-toothed. The flowers are in short terminal cymes, each 5-lobed flower being about 10 mm across, and blue in colour.

Halgania cyanea is found in mallee communities. It is locally common in north-western Victoria and also occurs in New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory.

The foliage is food for some Caterpillars, for example :
