Databases and Client/Server Computing

Introduction

Database technology is a key technology in most computer systems today and its applications range from single-user personal database to very large database systems with terabytes of data and thousands of users. Database technology has been developing at a very fast pace making it difficult for computer professionals to keep up with the latest advances in this field.

New database trends include client/server databases, complex object databases, high-volume databases, and mobile databases. All leading DBMS systems provide support for operation in client/server environments. Client/server systems have the potential to dramatically reduce the cost and improve the functionality of database applications but at the same time pose a number of new challenges to the implementors of this technology.

Objectives

The main purpose of these web pages is to enable industry-based professionals to access uptodate information on database and client/server computing topics with efficiency and without the need for excessive searching. The focus is on practical topics with relevance to industry rather than database theory.

There are three main sources which together contribute to the advances in the database field: university and industry-based research centres, international standards organizations, and vendors of commercially available database technology. We have structured these pages accordingly into three main areas:

  • Commercial Sites - the main commercially available database sites
  • Database Research Sites - leading database research sites
  • International Standards - database and client/server standards
