Massimo Piccardi, M.Eng. in EE (University of Bologna, Italy), Ph.D. in CE/CS (University of Bologna, Italy) Massimo Piccardi is a Professor of Computer Systems with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), that he joined in January 2002 as an associate professor. Previously, he was a senior lecturer/assistant professor with the Faculty of Engineering at University of Ferrara, Italy. At UTS, he co-ordinates the activities of the computer vision & visualization research group and serves as a Co-Director of the iNEXT Research Centre. His main research interests are in the areas of pattern recognition, computer vision, image and video analysis and processing, and computer architecture, with main applications to video surveillance, multimedia, and human-computer interaction (CHI). He has been the author or co-author of more than a hundred scientific papers on international journals and conferences, and two book chapters. He has been the first chief investigator in several research projects including two ARC (Australian Research Council) Discovery Projects and an ARC Linkage Project. Dr. Piccardi is a senior member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society and a member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. |

The
Australian Research Council has awarded a large research grant for a project on
Airports of the Future (ARC Linkage
Project LP0990135 for 2010-2013). The project will allocate

1 APAI Stipend of $26,669/year (indexed yearly, tax exempt)
·
1 Top-Up of $6,000/year (tax exempt)
for PhD studies on automated human action recognition from
surveillance videos, including use of multiple cameras and other sources of
data. The PhD studies will be conducted at

ideal recipient(s) are prospective PhD students with a strong interest in
statistical pattern recognition and real-time video analysis. To be eligible, a
candidate must possess an Honours 1 or 2A (or equivalent) undergraduate degree
and be admitted and enrol in a full-time PhD at UTS. Preference will be given
to applicants with demonstrated excellence in prior studies on image analysis,
pattern recognition, machine learning, and statistics.
