CALL FOR PAPERS MDM/KDD2002 - The Third International Workshop on Multimedia Data Mining July 23th, 2002 in conjunction with KDD-2002: 8th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining July 23 - 26, 2002, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (http://www.acm.org/sigkdd/kdd2002/) Workshop Web site: http://www-staff.it.uts.edu.au/~simeon/mdm_kdd2002/ Since the beginning of the century (yes, it is since then) there have been two successful international workshops on multimedia data mining at the KDD forums: MDM/KDD2000 and MDM/KDD2001, in conjunction with KDD2000 (in Boston) and KDD2001 (in San Francisco), respectively. These workshops brought together numerous experts in spatial data analysis, digital media, multimedia information retrieval, state-of-art data mining and knowledge discovery in multimedia database systems, analysis of data in collaborative virtual environments. Participants in both workshops were pleased with the event and there was consensus about the necessity of turning it into an annual meeting, where researchers, both from the academia and industry can exchange and compare both relatively mature and green house theories, methodologies, algorithms and frameworks for multimedia data mining. Meantime a discussion list on multimedia data mining was setup to facilitate this exchange. The aim of the workshop is to contribute to the following areas identified in previous workshops: - theoretical foundations of multimedia data mining - problems and applications where multimedia data mining can have severe impact - integrated patterns extraction from multimedia data - multimedia representations and formats that can help data mining of multimedia data - multimedia data mining systems To address this aim the workshop will bring together experts in analysis of digital media content, multimedia databases, knowledge engineers and domain experts from different applied disciplines with potential in multimedia data mining. The workshop will facilitate the cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas. The major topics of the workshop include but are not limited to: - theoretical frameworks for multimedia data mining; - multimedia data mining methods and algorithms; - multimedia data sampling and preprocessing; - data sonification and visualization; - representation and reuse of discovered knowledge; - multimedia data descriptions languages and formats; - evaluation of 'interestingness', 'novelty' and validity of results; - topic and event detection in multimedia data (including video); - extracting semantics from multimedia databases; - integrated data mining of text and image data; - integrated mining of medical multimedia data; - mining scientific multimedia data - integrated data mining in multimedia information systems - discovering patterns in musical and architectural data - knowledge discovery in facial data - man-machine interfaces for multimedia data mining; - complexity, efficiency and scalability of multimedia data mining algorithms; - data mining virtual communities and virtual worlds; - data mining in collaborative virtual environments and virtual reality systems; - visual and audio support for multimedia mining; - visual data mining of multimedia data; - multiagent environments for concurrent mining of heterogeneous data; - real-time multimedia data mining systems; - mining digital video, audio and other multimedia components. DEADLINES Submissions Due: 24 May 2002 Notification: 18 June 2002 Camera ready copy: 25 June 2002 DISSEMINATION Peer-reviewed papers, accepted for presentation at the workshop will be published in the workshop proceedings. Depending on the quality of the papers and presentations, extended and revised versions of selected submissions, together with selections from the previous workshops, will be published in a book in the Massive Computing series published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. REGISTRATION Registration for the workshop is free for the registrants of KDD-2001. Workshop attendance is limited to 60 participants only.
